The gap

Most small businesses use AI. Few have built it into how they work.

76%

of small business owners surveyed use AI

93%

of those using it report a positive impact on their business

14%

say AI is fully embedded in their core operations

73%

say they would benefit from more training and implementation resources

The gap isn’t interest. It’s capacity. Owners named what’s in the way: technical expertise, choosing the right tools and data privacy. We start with six everyday jobs, drafts you can check and no new software to learn.

Source: Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Voices, March 2026. Survey of 1,256 program participants, conducted by Babson College and David Binder Research. For a nationwide comparison, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s 2026 report found that 66% of small businesses use AI.

What it covers

Six jobs. One tool for each.

Each tool is a skill: a set of written instructions you add to Gemini, Claude or ChatGPT. It tells your AI assistant how to do one job and what to ask you. There’s no new software to learn.

How it works

Set it up once. Use it when the work comes in.

Add the tools to your AI assistant

Upload each tool to Gemini, Claude or ChatGPT. You only repeat this if we send you an update.

Call the one you need

In a chat, pick the tool and tell it what happened.

Check it and send it

Read the draft, fill in anything it flagged and send it from your own email or account.

Our standards

AI makes mistakes. Your name is on the work.

AI can be wrong and still sound sure. Everything we make is built around that fact.

You send everything.

Nothing goes to a customer, reviewer or employee unless you send it yourself.

It asks instead of guessing.

Missing prices, hours or steps are flagged for you to fill in.

Your advisers keep their jobs.

This isn’t legal, tax or accounting advice. Serious questions go to your accountant or lawyer.

Your data needs your judgment.

What you paste goes to your AI provider. Remove names, account numbers and other private details first, and check your provider’s privacy settings.

About us and how we use AI

Shifting Business is a project of Shifting Schools, run by Jeff Utecht and Tricia Friedman. Our day job is helping K-12 school leaders and educators work out where AI helps, where it doesn’t and how to check its work.

We built these tools with the same caution, for owners who’d rather see a sample than a pitch.

Questions

Common questions

What is Shifting Business?

Shifting Business makes AI tools for small business owners. The tools help with paperwork such as late invoices, quotes, review replies, cash flow checks and written procedures, and with reading what customers say on social media. The owner checks everything they produce.

Who are the tools for?

Owner-operators who handle their own paperwork, including contractors, cleaners, landscapers, cafes, salons and shops. You don’t need a technical background.

What do I need to use them?

An account with Gemini, Claude or ChatGPT that can use skills. Availability depends on your provider and plan, so check yours before you buy. See what to check.

Will this replace my accountant or lawyer?

No. The tools help you prepare drafts and spot questions. They aren’t legal, tax or accounting advice, so take serious decisions to your advisers.
